Chasing Long Exposures on the North Wales Coast: A Visit to Barmouth

There’s something special about heading to the coast with a camera. The fresh sea air, the sound of the waves, and the constantly changing light make every visit different. Recently, I made the journey to the beautiful seaside town of Barmouth on the mid-North Wales coast, hoping to capture some long exposure images along the shoreline.

Barmouth is well known for its wide sandy beach, colourful harbour, and stunning views across Cardigan Bay. But on this visit, my attention was drawn to the sea defences and timber groins that stretch out into the water.

For anyone unfamiliar with the term, groins are wooden structures built to help prevent the beach from being washed away by the sea. They create strong leading lines that naturally draw your eye through a photograph, making them perfect subjects for coastal photography.

The weather was calm enough to use long exposure techniques, which involve keeping the camera shutter open for several seconds. By using a tripod and a neutral density filter, I was able to slow the shutter speed down and smooth out the movement of the sea.

The result is an image that feels peaceful and timeless. The crashing waves transform into a soft, mist-like effect, while the sea defences remain sharp and solid against the moving water. It’s a fantastic way to show the contrast between motion and stillness.

As the tide moved in and out, the light constantly changed. Clouds drifted across the sky, creating moments of dramatic contrast and subtle colour. Patience is always important in landscape photography, and sometimes waiting just a few extra minutes can make all the difference.

One of the things I love most about Barmouth is how accessible it is. Whether you’re an experienced photographer or just starting out, there are plenty of opportunities to capture unique images along the seafront. The combination of natural beauty and man-made structures offers endless creative possibilities.

If you’re planning a photography trip to North Wales, Barmouth is definitely worth adding to your list. Pack a sturdy tripod, bring a few filters, and check the tide times before you set off. You never know what conditions you’ll find, but that’s all part of the adventure.

For me, this visit was a reminder that some of the best images come from slowing down, taking your time, and simply enjoying the experience of being by the sea.
